What is the January Labour Board Hearing About? From November 25, 2009There is a Saskatchewan Labour Board hearing in January to address an application by the Communication Energy and Paperworkers (CEP) Local Union 777 of Edmonton Alberta to certify JVD Mill Services of Edmonton Alberta to represent ALL JVD Mill Services workers on Saskatchewan jobs. This case was filed the same time as Bill 80 was sent to second reading in the legislature and not coincidentally at the same time as the Saskatchewan Government’s …

Canadian Cynic: And here’s where we juxtapose …
Here's Blogging Tory "JoJo," telling Hillary Clinton in no uncertain terms that she can mind her own fucking business, thank you very much:“It is Canada and Canadians who will make Canadian decisions.”... Prime Minister Harper stated in the House of Commons that “Whether it comes to our role in Afghanistan, our sovereignty over our Arctic or ultimately our foreign-aid priorities, it is Canada and Canadians who will make Canadian decisions.”And here's "JoJo" less than two weeks ago, sticking her nose where it doesn't belong:And why do I care [about U.S. health care reform]? Because the …

The Galloping Beaver: Canadian Navy to purchase BC Ferries
A leak from the Department of National Defence suggests that the Canadian Navy, desperate for a roll-on/roll-off capability, will purchase the entire BC Ferry fleet as a strategic resource. A navy spokesperson declined to comment except to say:BC Ferries and the navy have always worked hand-in-hand. There's nothing unusual about this. In time of war, we own them anyway. A pre-war purchase would simply make things easier. When asked which war he was talking about, navy spokesperson, Leading Seaman A. W. Gotobed could only add:Wars come and go. We never know when they're going to happen. But we …

...and consequently denying Muslim women their own agency and possibly creating circumstances that keep them indoors and out of public sight, because some people don't like they way they dress, perhaps we might also do something arguably much more socially productive and ban adolescent males from wearing their trousers around their knees.Because seeing some pimply dude's gitch disturbs me a hell of a lot more than some fine textile drapped over a woman. The former looks crass and I can't help but wonder if I should offer the wearer my belt. The other whispers of mystery and ancient custom. …

Dawg's Blawg: Annals of counter-terrorism: fruit of the poison tree
Mohamed Harkat's security certificate hearing took an...interesting turn yesterday:The federal government case against Ottawa terror suspect Mohamed Harkat appears to have suffered a significant blow Wednesday when a document was introduced in court showing that Abu Zubaydah, once considered a master terrorist and 9/11 mastermind, actually had nothing to do with the attacks. Even more surprising, the document, which quotes U.S court filings declassified last week, shows that Zubaydah, once believed to be one of the top leaders in al-Qaeda, was not even a member of the terrorist group. …

Oh yes, Redneck Ryan must be green with envy now as he was touting this kind of idea on his show. Tax those who need more health care services. I believe he said, it would get him to the gym in short order or something along those lines. I did email or tweet him subsequently mentioning that not all sick people had it coming due to a less than healthy life style. I gave as examples: kids born with cystic fibrosis and/or other disabilities and chronic conditions. How about that cancer …

Facing Autism in New Brunswick: On World Autism Awareness Day Please Be Aware That Autism Is A Disorder
On World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, remember that autism is a disorder or more accurately a group of disorders. It is not just a different way of thinking, a way of life or a political career path for a media savvy high functioning University student with little exposure to, or actual knowledge of the realities of severe Autistic Disorder.
There are indeed many very high functioning persons with Aspergers and some high functioning persons with other "autism" disorders. There are also many persons with Autistic Disorder and Intellectual Disability and …

Dawg's Blawg: I’ll see your scientist and raise you
I stand by my prediction about the results of the Science and Technology Select Committee but just wanted to add a data point. In the comments, the point was raised that The dissenting member was the only member with a science background.I was curious about this comment so I did a bit of digging around when I got a chance. There were 4 MPs on the committee who looked at this topic. The dissenting view was made by MP Graham Stringer who does indeed have a BSc. (hons) in chemistry and who worked in the field for a while. The other members are:Tim Boswell: Mr. Boswell has a degree in Classics …

Canadian Cynic: More kittehs!
Very soon, there will be a passel of new kittehs available here in K-W. A neighbour had two females that, in a spectacular display of timing, managed to get pregnant two weeks apart and, just last night, I personally saw all 10 kittehs in their large cardboard box. What's weird is that the two mothers get along and actually share joint custody of the whole brood -- whoever's in the mood will allow any of the kittehs to feed while the other takes a break. Weird. In any event, shortly after I saw the pack, said neighbour whisked the whole bunch off to the K-W Humane Society. The older ones are …

Barack Obama:
- Against offshore drilling before he was for it.
- For "use it or lose it" before he was against it.
Look, when you have Repub Mitch McConnell saying this is "a step in the right direction", you know the planet is in trouble.
Barack Obama - never met a triangulation he didn't like.
Apparently, he thinks "negotiating" means giving away the farm (or the oceans, in this case) before you even sit down at the table. And, once you've done that, you give away even more - all in the spirit (choke choke) of "bipartisanship". That's what he did with the health insurance "reform" …
