There is a job for you at the end of this post. You can skip down there if you don't have time to enjoy my lavish metaphors.****Since Mr. Harper and Peter MacKay pulled their MIB skin-change on the Reform and PC parties in 2004, Harper has leaped forward in power, chiefly by doing things no-one thought he would dare to do, often the opposite of things he declared he MUST do, or would NEVER do.Shut down parliament? Sure, no big deal. When l'etat c'est moi, those other 307 MPs just clutter up the place. Juggle elections with unauthorized ad money zipping around like a Find The Lady card …

The Galloping Beaver: Handy Hallmark
Believe me, I am grateful. It saves me so much time and trouble in listening to government officials, to know that once they use the word "academic" as an epithet I can stop listening at once and go take a shower instead. In their minds, "academic" means "someone who spends their whole working life studying, researching and teaching one specific topic, and who therefore knows less about it than the boyos down at the Salisbury House Saturday morning breakfast club."Rich Coleman BC's Minister of Housing and Social Development, sprang the A word early in his interview CBC interview this morning, …

The Galloping Beaver: The Real Function of the Gall Bladder
Oh, for heaven's sake. Here's our Mr. Harper fretting about the threat to Canada of having an election:The Prime Minister repeated his message that a hasty trip to the polls threatens Canada's economic recovery. “An election does nothing but present a great risk to the country,” he said.Gee, please explain how that could be worse than the 2008 spring, summer and fall of legislative non-action followed by a bit of a change -- the pro-rogueing of Parliament -- during the market collapse and economic panic of our largest trading partner. That's the difference between modern day Harperites …

The Galloping Beaver: Thin Man?
Riding home from work, I was listening to the lawyer of alleged disgraced moneyjuggler Earl Jones, discussing how Jones has been in Canada for 10 days, how he is suicidal, depressed, and afraid of being attacked or killed. What I did not hear was anyone else stating, much less proving, that Jones is in fact in Canada, or even alive. I found the horrible denouement of the Hammett novel "The Thin Man" rising in my consciousness like a body out of a lake. So, I will listen with interest to what happens next, hoping no-one has to dig up the cellar floor. …

The Galloping Beaver: Sheesh Alert — Slime Mold Invasion at the CBC
It has been infuriating to watch the CBC being infiltrated with right-wing stupidity over the past year or so. It's not the conservative part that bothers me, but the lies, disproved memes and bafflegab being presented as sober commentary. That's during discussion and lectures. But here it is, rising like a mushroom from the news, whose writers should dang well know better. I wrote to them today regarding the coverage of the Sotomayor hearings.-----------------Why are you presenting the "wise Latina: meme in conformance with the American right wing's take on the topic? If you read the …
