My Blahg: FREE TRADE SHOULD OPEN OUR BORDERS TO THE FLOW OF PEOPLE TOO

July 14, 2009 by Robert McClelland

Earlier today I wrote this comment over at Dawg’s Blawg in a post about the Conservative Party’s latest immigration fiasco. I can’t fault Kenney or the Conservatives on these moves to tighten our borders. The left should have long ago insisted that Free Trade not only open up our borders to the free flow of goods but also the free flow of people. I had planned to expand on this in a post of my own but fortunately while I was procrastinating The New Resilient did the heavy lifting for me. Canadians need to understand the context of today’s announcement that Mexican citizens …

My Blahg: TAX CUTS ARE KILLING NUCLEAR POWER

July 14, 2009 by Robert McClelland

Four weeks ago I wrote this comment over at the Macleans blog. The Darlington NGS, which has 4 reactors with a capacity of 3500MW, cost $15 billion to build 16 years ago. The rate of inflation alone would push that cost up to $25 billion if construction was started today and finished in a decade. The ongoing shortage of skilled trades would probably add another $5 billion to the cost. McGuinty foolishly thinks Ontario will be able to build 12 new reactors (12,000MW capacity) for $40 billion. He’s nuts. 12 new reactors would cost the province a minimum of $75 billion and would most likely …

My Blahg: GYPSIES, TRAMPS AND THIEVES

July 14, 2009 by Robert McClelland

From a supposedly progressive liberal who apparently believes all Gypsies are thieves. If the Gypsies are difficult citizens all over Europe, why would we want to import that problem here? We’ve all been to a piazza in Europe on a school day where some cute kid with dirth on their rosey cheeks pretens to want to talk to to you while their little kid brother feels for your wallet. And the parents watch, encourage this kind of activity. …

My Blahg: LAME PROPAGANDA ALERT

July 5, 2009 by Robert McClelland

Republicans for Ignatieff my ass. This newly created site is a ridiculously transparent attempt by anonymous Canadian conservatives to keep the Conservative Party’s dying Iggy spent 34 years outside of Canada meme going. Despite it’s transparency however, I won’t be the least bit surprised if the gullible press runs with it for a day or two. …

My Blahg: CLIMATE DENIAL CROCK OF THE WEEK

June 14, 2009 by Robert McClelland

If you haven’t been watching Peter Sinclair’s YouTube series that rebuts the bilge coming from climate change deniers you should be. Here’s this week’s episode that takes on faux documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle. …

My Blahg: HAS AHMADINEJAD EVER PRODUCED HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE

June 14, 2009 by Robert McClelland

Some thoughts on reactions to the Iranian election. I don’t know for certain if the election in Iran was stolen but I do know for certain that any result not favourable to the right would result in a claim that the election was stolen. Claiming that elections have been stolen has become one of the primary weapons in the right’s arsenal to overturn unfavourable results or sow the seeds of doubt about the legitimacy of a government that is viewed as unfavourable by them. I’m starting to see calls for protests outside of Iranian Embassies around the world. Hey, forget what we …

My Blahg: BLAHG BITS JUNE 11/09

June 11, 2009 by Robert McClelland

Does Legalization Reduce Drug Use? It has in Portugal. Since July 1, 2001, all drugs including cocaine and heroine have been decriminalized in Portugal. Eight years later, consumption has decreased significantly. About half of the nearly 400 lives lost every year to overdoses are now saved. Drug users had represented more than half of all new HIV cases in Portugal, or nearly 1,400 individuals infected annually. That toll has fallen to 400 per year, about 25 percent of the total. So not only is the war on drugs a dismal, money wasting failure but it may also be responsible for higher rates of …

My Blahg: WHO’S UP FOR SOME TARGET PRACTICE

June 8, 2009 by Robert McClelland

I haven’t seen anyone mention this about the tape yet. A bullseye has been painted on Aglukkaq’s forehead with the revelation that “the communications strategy around Ms. Aglukkaq is to never put her out in public.” Something tells me that the opposition are going to start asking a lot of questions about healthcare during Question Period. …
